the unbearable heaviness of “if only”

The game we play, “if only.” The game with no gains, only losses. The game your ego has mastered.

-“If only I had more money, I could stop working and then I could work on myself.”

-“If only I had more money, I would be free and I could help others.”

-“If only I had a job I enjoyed, I wouldn’t be so exhausted all the time and could meditate.”

-“If only I didn’t get married, I could travel the world.”

-“If only my children weren’t so needy, I would have time to exercise.”

-“If only I had a bigger house, I would have more room and I would be happier.”

“If only…”

I play it, you play it. It is the game where you do not want to find yourself in the arena.

For your ego, it is a matter of protection. A combination of complete dependence coupled with mental exhaustion. Your ego ensures you need “if only” because if you focus on being here, in the moment, giving your full attention and devotion to what is, whatever that may be, “if only” goes away.

At that point, you simply are as you are intended to be, in alignment with what the Spirit has asked of you in that moment.

Non-attachment does not mean relinquishment. You have responsibilities. You have a husband/wife/partner, you have children, you have to eat. It is okay to own a home, it is okay to have hobbies/interests. You do not simply give up and walk away, you merely put in the work to tend to the moment as it is presented to you with full awareness and love.

Not “if only” but “what is.” It is the only thing you can truly count upon. This moment. And the meaningful work is letting go so you can find stillness and clarity in those moments.

See yourself in Love, as I see you.
